23rd May 2014: Charles Darwin Trust
Published on 23rd May 2014
Carl von Linné was born on the 23rd May, 1775. Here at the Linnean society we want to wish him a huge Happy Birthday and take this opportunity to announce a fantastic new project...
The Linnean Society is delighted to announce that the Charles Darwin Trust, an educational charitable trust, has generously chosen to gift to the Society an exceptional collection of Darwin’s manuscripts and publications, together with various Wallace items, which were built up by the late Quentin Keynes, a great grandson of Charles Darwin, and subsequently amplified with items originally inherited by Darwin’s granddaughter, Margaret Keynes.
The Linnean Society will become the sole trustee of this important collection which will of course be highly complementary to the Society’s own collection of Darwin and Wallace items.
The Society plans to bring the collections together at Burlington House in a room designated to become its flagship education space, making the Darwin and Wallace Collection accessible as a resource to the public, scholars and researchers for education and outreach, but especially to inspire and excite school children and enhance public understanding of biology.
Here at the Linnean Society, we would like to thank everyone at the Charles Darwin Trust, in particular Stephen Keynes, Chairman of CDT, and Randal Keynes, a Trustee of CDT, for all of their help with this project.
