8th June 2016: Oxford University Press to partner with The Linnean Society of London on journals publishing

Oxford University Press (OUP) has signed an agreement with The Linnean Society of London to publish their three journals and host their archive of two historical titles. From January 2017, OUP will publish the Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, and the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society. It will continue to host archival content from Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London and Transactions of the Linnean Society of London.

Jennifer Boyd, Senior Publisher for Oxford Journals, commented on the acquisition:

We are delighted to partner with the Linnean Society of London and to publish the Society’s prestigious journals. We look forward to working with the Society and the journals’ editorial teams to further develop the excellent reputation of these titles.

The journals cover evolutionary and systematic biology and botany, and the Biological Journal is a direct descendant of the oldest biological journal in the world, which published ground breaking papers on evolution by Darwin and Wallace. Transactions of the Linnean Society started publishing in 1791, with the other titles starting in the 1800s, so the Society has a long history of being at the forefront of evolution and natural history.

Deborah Wright, Treasurer of the Linnean Society also commented:

OUP brings commitment, professionalism and expertise to support our current journals' publishing programme in biological sciences along with our rich heritage of publications dating back to 1791. This is an exciting time when dissemination of information moves rapidly into cyberspace and beyond traditional publishing routes. OUP is well placed to provide the support, flexibility and innovation needed to meet the challenges facing philanthropic Societies, their authors and their reader communities.
