Her Royal Highness became an Honorary Member during the Tercentenary celebration of the birth of Carl Linnaeus in 2007. As part of the ceremony, The Princess Royal signed our Roll & Charter and presented three especially commissioned Tercentenary medals to Sir David Attenborough, Professor E.O. Wilson and Professor Steve Jones.

Her Royal Highness has shown a longstanding interest in science and conservation, as well as supporting championing opportunities for young people.

As part of the Society’s mission of understanding, valuing and protecting nature, the Linnean Society has a history of engaging a range of audiences in nature and sharing our collections to understand more about the history of science. We run an education programme providing opportunities for young people to be involved in nature, providing resources to help them study and understand it, as well as opportunities like Our Local Nature Grants to take action.

Her Royal Highness’s support will be instrumental in enabling us to achieve our charitable objectives, and help more people engage with natural history.

President of the Linnean Society Professor Anjali Goswami said of the news: “We are honoured that The Princess Royal has taken up our invitation to become Patron of the Linnean Society. We are excited to build upon Her Royal Highness’s previous involvement in the Society and are grateful for The Princess’s support as we enact our new strategy to cultivate a global community working for a world where nature is understood, valued and protected.”
