Herbaria Catalogues
Spencer Savage, who served as the Linnean Society's Librarian and Assistant Secretary from 1929 to 1951, compiled catalogues of our two herbaria, which are available here to view and download. These catalogues are commonly known as the "Savage Catalogues".
Linnaean Herbarium
The catalogue of Carl Linnaeus' herbarium was published in 1945.
Smithian Herbarium
In 1963, Spencer Savage compiled a Catalogue of the Smithian Herbarium, which was never published. However, the manuscript is invaluable for interpreting the annotations on the herbarium sheets. It is particularly important to consult this catalogue when searching specimens on Linnean Online. The catalogue is in seven parts and specimens are ordered by Genus and Sheet number (e.g. 1234.12), which can be found in the title of each specimen and its associated metadata.
